Suspected Calif. Cop-Killer Was Living in US Illegally

The Stanislaus County Sheriff‘s Department said Thursday that it couldn’t confirm the name of a suspect wanted in the Dec. 26 murder of a small-town cop—but it could confirm that the man was in the US illegally. Sheriff Adam Christianson vowed that officers would find the man who fatally shot Newman, Calif. officer Ronil Singh after being stopped for suspected DUI around 1am on Wednesday, USA Today reports. “We will relentlessly continue to hunt our suspect down and bring him to justice so that … we can bring closure onto this community and this police department,” the sheriff said. “This suspect is in our country illegally. He doesn’t belong here. He is a criminal.”

“Please help us find this coward,” said Newman Police Chief Randy Richardson. The sheriff‘s department—which released new images of the suspect late Thursday—did not say what the suspect’s country of origin is, or how long he had been in the US illegally. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the small town of Newman has been shaken by the death of Singh, the first officer in the town’s history to die in the line of duty. Singh, a 33-year-old originally from Fiji, leaves a wife and a 5-month old son. President Trump tweeted about the case Thursday. “There is right now a full scale manhunt going on in California for an illegal immigrant accused of shooting and killing a police officer during a traffic stop,” he said. “Time to get tough on Border Security. Build the Wall!” (Read more California stories.)
