Cops warn of phone thief working Loop area; 4 thefts from pedestrians late last week

Chicago police have issued a community alert to warn people about a series of phone thefts in the Loop. At least four incidents were reported last Thursday and Friday, according to the alert. Detectives generally issue warnings when they believe a series of crimes are the work of the same person or group.

According to the alert, the offender is snatching phones from the hands of pedestrians and has picked phones from pockets and open purses during daylight hours.

Two incidents were reported Thursday: one in the first block of South Wabash at 4:10 p.m. and the other in the 300 block of South Dearborn at 8 p.m. On Friday, reports were filed in the first block of South Wabash at 10:50 a.m. and the first block of East Madison at 11:50 a.m.

Police are encouraging people to be aware of their surroundings in the downtown area.

The suspect is described in the alert as a black male in his 20’s who stands about 6-feet tall and wears a hooded sweatshirt.
