Van Carrying Methamphetamine Worth 140 Million Dollars Crashes Into Police Cars In Sydney, Australia

If you’re going to be driving around with $140 million worth of meth, what definitely falls under the “you had one job” category is to avoid getting pulled over by the cops—or crashing into a couple of cop cars. This week, one man in Sydney, Australia, allegedly failed spectacularly at latter mission, with New South Wales authorities now crowing at what they’re calling one of the “easiest” drug busts they’ve ever made, per the Guardian. Police say Monday morning they heard a loud bang outside their station in Eastwood, and when they headed out to take a look, they discovered two of their parked squad cars had been slammed into by a hit-and-run driver, significantly damaging one of the vehicles.

About an hour later, they pulled over what appeared to be the van that was shown on surveillance video hitting their cars—and inside the van, they say, was about 600 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in sealed boxes, with a street value of about $140 million. “This man has certainly had a very, very bad day,” a police rep told reporters. “Crashing into a police vehicle with that amount of drugs on board is somewhat unheard of. It’s an exceptional set of circumstances.” The suspect, identified by Time as Simon Tu and said to be in his mid- to late 20s, was arrested and charged with drug trafficking, negligent driving, and not providing the proper info to police. Per CNN, the van is being given a forensic once-over by authorities. Tu, meanwhile, is being held without bail. (Read more weird crimes stories.)
